Configuring a Record Set Template

Using the Record Set Templates is perfect for anyone that has similar configurations for many of their domains and want to get their domains up and running quickly. Here are the two different ways you can use a Record Set Template.

  • You can "lock" your domain(s) to your template so if you ever make changes to your template all of your domains will change by just pressing the "reload" option.
  • You can apply the Record Set Template to the domain when it is first created. This will allow you to setup a set of records for your domain so you can get most of your records configured without doing any work
    • NOTE: Failover and Monitoring settings are not copied over if you do not "lock" your template to your domain(s). You will need to add the Failover / Monitoring to each domain if you do not "lock" the domain to the Record Set Template.

Here are the steps to create a Record Set Template.

  1. Choose "Advanced DNS Settings" from the Main Menu.

  2. Make sure that you have "Record Set Templates" turned "ON".
    • If you do not then you will want to click on the "ON" for the "Record Set Template" option and click on "Set Values".

  3. Click on "Template Configuration".

  4. Click on "Add Record Set".
  5. Enter the name of the Record Set Template.
  6. Click "Continue".
  7. Click "Records" to configure your records for the Record Set Template. You can also apply Failover / Monitoring and DDNS settings to the Template.
    • Note: You will probably not need to add any NS records in your templates. These are automatically created by DNS Made Easy or by your Vanity NS configuration.

    • Note: Your records in your Record Set Template should pretty much look identical to what you have in your domain(s). But instead of seeing the domain name you will see a place holder named (root record). The place holder is used to represent the domain name that will be using the template.
      • So if your domain(s) all have 4 records. You will make the same four records in the template. And the template will take care of the rest. So the best thing to do would be to click on each one of your records and view the "name" "value" and the "TTL" and then create the same records in your template.

  8. (optional for locked domains) All Failover and DDNS changes are automatically made to all domains that are locked to the Record Set Template. But if you make any manual changes to the "Record Set Template" you will need to click on "Reload" to reload all of the domains that are "locked" to the template. This allows you the time to make major changes without risking your domains going offline.
