Import Records from exsiting Name Server

Many DNS Made Easy customers already have their domains working on previous name servers before they move to DNS Made Easy. Since all of this information has already been manually entered in another DNS system we have deisgned a way to import (using AXFR) the existing records into the DNS Made Easy.

This tutorial explains how you can import your existing records into DNS Made Easy's record management sysytem. This of course only applies to you if you use our "Managed DNS" service (where we provide Managed and Secondary name servers). The "Secondary DNS" service will of course do an AXFR automatically.

Importing your existing records from another name servers is free for all DNS Made Easy users and is included in our Managed DNS product.

  1. Log into the DNS Made Easy interface.
  2. Click on "Advanced DNS Settings" from the Main Menu.

  3. If your "Name Server Imports" functionality is turned "Off" then you will want to make sure it is marked "On" and click "Set Values"
  4. You will be shown the IP of the current application server.
      • This will be the IP that you must tell your existing name server to allow AXFRs for. If you want to be safe (in case you log into a different DNS Made Easy application server in the next few days) you could tell your current name server to allow transfers to the the whole subnet /24.
  5. Return to the Main Menu .
      • You can do this from the "Advanced DNS Settings" screen by clicking on "Main Menu".
  6. Click on "Managed DNS".
  7. Click on "Add New Domains" or "Add Bulk Domains" if you are adding your domains for the first time and want to import the records.
    OR
Click on the domain name to import the records to a domain that you have already added to the DNS Made Easy system.
  8. Select the radio box to import your records from an existing name server and enter the IP or FQDN (fully qualified domain name) of the name server you want to get an AXFR from.
  9. Click "Continue" to import your records and follow the instructions on the screen.

For all future domains that you want to use your Vanity DNS for all you need to do is complete steps #6, #7, #8 and #9.

That is all it takes to import your existing records into DNS Made Easy!
