How soon will DNS changed take affect?

All DNS changes are immediate once your domain has been added to the nameservers.

If you are changing your record remember that it will take the TTL (time to live) seconds to expire before your new changes go into affect. You can set the TTL to any value you want but this is monitored for abuse. Reasonable values for a static IP are 21600 seconds (6 hours). Reasonable values for a Dynamic IP are 30 to 60 seconds.

Domains which use the Secondary DNS solution are scheduled to be entered no earlier than 48 after you enter the data. This should give you more than enough time to configure your DNS to allow transfers to our Secondary Nameservers.

Secondary DNS: What nameservers do I use?
(You or another agency must provide the Primary DNS.)

Tell the Registrar with which you registered (or which you will register) that your domain will be using DNS Made Easy's secondary nameserver(s). You will have to provide some (or all) of the following information:

    • Nameservers:
      • ns5.dnsmadeeasy.com - 63.219.151.12
      • ns6.dnsmadeeasy.com - 64.246.42.203
      • ns7.dnsmadeeasy.com - 205.234.170.139

    • If you limit your nameservers to only allow transfers to certain IPs then the nameservers that you will want to allow transfers from are:
      • 63.219.151.12
      • 64.246.42.203
      • 205.234.170.139

    What is DNS?

The domain name system (DNS) is the technology used that allows an Internet domain name to be translated into an Internet Protocol addresses. A domain name is a meaningful and easy-to-remember name for an Internet address.

DNS handles the mapping between host names, which we humans find convenient (example: www.DNSMadeEasy.com), and Internet addresses which computers deal with (192.168.98.2). Very similar to how we all use the telephone book.

    What is a Domain Name?

A domain name locates an organization or other entity on the Internet. For example DNSMadeEasy.com is for the DNS Made Easy organization. www.DNSMadeEasy.com is a computer in the DNS Made Easy organization. See FQDN.

    What is IP?

The Internet Protocol (IP) is the method or protocol by which data is sent from one computer to another on the Internet. Each computer (known as a host) on the Internet has at least one IP address that uniquely identifies it from all other computers on the Internet. Very similar to a phone number.

What is a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) ?

A Fully Qualified Domain Name is the complete name written to specify a node's (computer) location in the hierarchy.

For example there may be two groups within the DNS Made Easy organization; sales and marketing. So we could use the sub domains sales.dnsmadeeasy.com and market.dnsmadeeasy.com. If there was to be a system in the marketing group the FQDN for this computer would be computer1.market.dnsmadeeasy.com.

www.DNSMadeEasy.com is the FQDN for the webserver for the whole entire DNS Made Easy organization. Where as www.market.DNSMadeEasy.com could be the FQDN for the webserver for the marketing department inside of the DNS Made Easy organization.

Why is DNS Made Easy's Dynamic IP Solution better than the rest?

How is DNS Made Easy different from other services?

    • Many other services only update their records at set times. Many run their updates at night or once a day. Often forcing you to have a day of downtime.
      • DNS Made Easy makes the DNS updates immediately.
    • Other services require you to have a large TTL. A TTL (time to live) is the length of time that your record will stay in cache (memory) on other systems. Since other providers force you to have TTLs of 12 hours to 1 day you will have a long period of downtime.
    • DNS Made Easy has a 100% uptime history.
      • Something that not many other providers can claim.

    • DNS Made Easy allows you to create various types of records including the use of the TTL variable.
    • No other service on the Internet gives such easy GUI tools and such extensive help.
    • Anyone is able to set up FQDNs (Fully Qualified Domain Names) for their static IPs in seconds.
    • DNS Made Easy engineers stay on top of the DNS technology to keep adding new functionality to the DNS Made Easy site.

    What is a Wildcard Record?

Wildcard Records give you the ability to map all (or a section) of the records in your domain to one IP. All Wildcard records are created with A records.

If you create a record that is part of your domain (and inclusive of the wild card set) then only that record is directed to the other IP and everything else will goto the Wildcard record.

    Example:
    Name
    TTL
    Type
    IP
    *.dnsmadeeasy.com. 10800 A 192.168.1.2
    www.dnsmadeeasy.com. 10800 A 10.2.54.4

The 'www' record would goto 10.2.54.4 but all of the other IPs would goto 192.168.1.2

All members can create Wildcard records for their domains.

What is a HTTP Redirection Record?

HTTP Redirection Records allow you to map your FQDN to any URL of your choice.
For instance you can map. http://www.yourdomain.com
    to
    http://www2.yourdomain.com:9001/users/mypage.html

All users can create HTTP Redirection Records with any of the DNS Made Easy memberships.

    What is a TTL?

TTL (time to live) is the amount of time that your record is cached in nameservers all around the Internet. If your IP changes often (or if you plan to move your computer to another IP) it is recommended to set your TTL to a lower value. Once your IP is on a static IP (or after you have transferred your system to the new IP) it is recommended to switch your IP to a higher value.

The higher the TTL the faster the performance since most machines will have the value cached for a longer period of time. However a TTL that it too high often causes lengthy periods of downtime if your system is ever needs to switch IPs.

All TTLs in DNS Made Easy are set is seconds.

If your computer's IP is static then a recommended TTL is 12 hours. (43200 seconds).
If your computer is on a dynamic IP then it is recommended that your TTL is between 5 and 120 seconds.
